How to Position a Lifting Beam or Spreader Bar Without Hands on the Rigging Points

The lifting beam itself is often the first load to be positioned in a complex lift sequence — and it is routinely handled by hand near its rigging attachment points, the precise location where the next load will be suspended.

Before a primary lift begins, the lifting beam or spreader bar must be positioned and aligned with its rigging attachment points. This preliminary task is routinely performed by placing hands directly on the beam near its shackle points and lifting eyes to make rotational and positional corrections.

The Exposure at Rigging Points

A lifting beam is typically suspended from a single crane hook while being positioned. Its rigging attachment points — where shackles, hooks, and sling legs will be connected for the primary lift — are the same locations where workers place their hands to make positional corrections. Fingers placed near a shackle point on a suspended beam are adjacent to both the beam's swing arc and the crushing hazard created when rigging components are assembled under tension.

Tool Selection for Beam Positioning

The beam's orientation and the operator's position both change as alignment proceeds. The operator typically walks around the beam to check alignment from different angles. Magnetic Engagement on Beam Surfaces

Lifting beams are frequently painted or coated for corrosion protection. Coating condition varies with the beam's service history. A light test pull to verify magnetic engagement on the actual beam surface is particularly important before using the tool for beam alignment work — especially on beams that may have accumulated paint layers over multiple recoat cycles.

Application Note

Lifting beam positioning takes place before the primary lift — it is a prerequisite for a safe lift. Apply the same engineering controls as for any other suspended ferrous load. The pre-lift task is not exempt from the engineering discipline that governs the main lift.
