Hand Safety in Steel Service Centres — Reducing Exposure During Plate and Coil Handling

Steel service centres handle high volumes of plate, sheet, and coil in repetitive positioning cycles. The exposure is not from rare events — it is from the routine task performed hundreds of times per shift.

The hand exposure in a steel service centre is different in character from most other industrial settings. It is not concentrated in a single complex lift or an unusual maintenance task. It occurs in the same positioning motion, repeated many times per shift, by workers for whom hand contact has become habitual.

High-Repetition Exposure

In cut-to-length and slitting operations, processed plate and sheet stock must be positioned onto pallets, bundling stations, or outbound transport repeatedly throughout the shift. Each positioning cycle is individually low-risk in appearance — a small correction, a brief hand contact. The risk accumulates across hundreds of repetitions per shift.

Engineering Controls for High-Frequency Tasks

For high-repetition service centre tasks, tool selection should prioritise low weight and fast engagement over maximum standoff distance. A 2 ft tool (MG002) with a 90° Flex Head is typically appropriate: consistent standoff from the plate face, lightweight construction that reduces fatigue in high-cycle operation, and predictable articulation geometry that suits the consistent approach angles of a production line environment.

Tool Availability as an Engineering Decision

In production environments where the same positioning motion occurs repeatedly, the tool should be stationed at the work position — not kept in a storage area to be fetched when needed. If the tool is harder to reach than the hand, workers will use the hand. Engineering the tool's availability into the workstation design is as important as selecting the correct tool configuration.

Application Note

Service centre plate stock carries varied surface conditions — clean cut plate, mill-scaled hot-rolled material, and partially rusted stock may all be handled in the same session. Verify attachment on each new plate rather than assuming uniform engagement.
